"I have had lower middle back pain since Tuesday 16 Dec. After not playing much tennis for three months I went out Sunday and played 2.5 hours, Monday for 1.5 hours, and again Tuesday for 1.5 hours! I couldn't bend over and turning was painful. After a brief interview, Steve went to work first on my low back and lats. While he was working on me I told him my problem with my hamstring was persisting. He then began exploring muscle paths from my glute down to my knee. As he worked just above the outside of my knee I began to feel my BACK relaxing! Turns out I had left out a key piece of info during the interview. My hamstring was still bothering me which, as it turned out, was in large part the problem. Apparently ALL of this from head to toe is LITERALLY connected. I have been to at least a DOZEN massage therapists I can say none of the others would have been this effective."

Back Pain           
"Sam, 49, had “thrown his back out” again. Sam’s busy job required him to sit in front of a computer all day and when he got home he was too tired to do much except eat dinner and watch TV. When his back went out, usually he laid around the house for about three days until the pain started to ease, then went to his chiropractor. Unfortunately, this routine was repeated once or twice a year. His brother-in-law had the same problem until he came to see me, so he suggested Sam give me a call.

The root of Sam’s problem was that he sat all day so his hip flexors had shortened, and lack of exercise had left his abdominal muscles weak, allowing his hips to begin tilting forward. This combination stressed his low back muscles and glutes  (butt muscles), giving him pain in the low back, sacral area and upper hip/butt. When I rebalanced his muscles and stretched him out, he was greatly relieved. After the second visit he was back to normal again. Now he knows how to stretch regularly to counterbalance the postural stresses his job creates. He was also motivated to begin exercising a little each week to help his posture and his back pain problem cycle has been broken."

Shoulder Pain             
"Audrey, a Physical Therapist in my building, was leaving work early because the pain in her shoulder was so bad she could no longer treat patients. She had sought treatment from other PTs in her clinic but got no relief. Walking by my office on her way to the parking garage, she decided to stop and see me (though I had never worked on her or her patients before). She described intense pain in the back of her shoulder, running down her arm, and she could hardly move it. I told her it sounded like one of her rotator cuff muscles (located on the underside of the shoulder blade) had locked up and was irritating nerves as well as altering the rotation of her shoulder joint.

Upon treatment lasting about 30 minutes, Audrey felt so much better she went back to work and resumed treating her own patients."

Headaches                  
"Millie, 29, came to me with chronic headache problems, usually three to five per week. Her doctor told her nothing was wrong, but she knew that was not right. She was an administrative support clerk and spent her work day at the computer and on the phone. She told me the pain always started at the back of her neck and base of her head, and the headaches throbbed on the side of her head and into her forehead. I told her that her problem probably came from the head-forward posture she had due to the positions she held all day at her job. The muscles that have to hold a 12 pound head up all day are overworked, stressed and tight. By releasing the knotty muscles Millie experienced relief right away, and by doing the simple stretches I showed her she only has to revisit me every few months for a tune-up."

Sciatica              
"Maria called to ask if I could help her sciatica. I asked her about her symptoms which were: pain deep in her butt, in her sacroiliac joint (SI Joint), and occasionally down the back of her leg if she moved a certain way. I replied I was pretty sure I could help because her symptoms sounded like a muscle problem called piriformis syndrome, not a structural problem which is what sciatica truly is. Most people have the same misconception. Piriformis is a muscle deep in the middle of the butt that crosses the sciatic nerve. When it is too tight, it causes nerve irritation and pulls on the sacrum causing the symptoms Maria described. The pain can be excruciating but generally easily addressed. I found the problem muscle in her backside and released it in one session. Maria was much better and has since referred several friends to me for help for various problems."

 

Neck Pain           
"Helen, age 62, came to see me suffering from chronic neck pain and restricted range of motion. She had bee suffering for over 15 years and had visited a chiropractor several times, but her pain persisted. She visited her doctor and was given pain medications and muscle relaxers, and when that did not help, physical therapy was prescribed. After 16 treatments, (not to mention co-pays and missed time from work) she was not much better and decided that she was destined to suffer.

Years later a friend who I had helped suggested she come see me. I found that her deep cervical paraspinals, extensors of the neck and head, and trapezius muscles were stuck short and tight with knots. Adhesions had started to form as well. This combination caused nerve irritation, disc compression, pain and restriction of motion. After our first session, she had significant improvement. After session two, she said “my neck has not felt this good in 25 years!” I showed her stretches to do every day, and I have not seen her since."

Plantar Fasciitis          
"Mary, age 36, was a recreational jogger. But the bottom of her right foot had become so sore that she could not run anymore. Plus, it hurt like the devil when she got out of bed in the morning. Some people told her she needed orthotics. Others had heard that surgery was the answer. When she asked me, I told her most of the time the problem starts with muscle tightness in the calf and then works its way to the sole of the foot. When she came in for a session, that is what we found. Her calf muscles we stuck short and tense, pulling on the heel to which they are attached via the Achilles tendon. The plantar fascia became inflamed because of the constant tension on the heel. The muscle that flexed her big toe was also a problem. The first step was to relax the problem muscles and allow the plantar fascia to have some slack. Then we worked on the fascia to rehydrate and soften it. After the second visit, she was significantly improved and I showed her how to continue self-treatment at home."

Medial Knee Pain                 
"Bobbie was a 40 something woman, carrying a few too many extra pounds. She had developed pain on the inside of her left knee that bothered her when she walked or climbed stairs. I discovered that her medial (inside) hamstring (the muscle on the back of your thigh) was short and tight which was torquing/twisting her knee with each step. Plus, the small muscle in back of the knee that helps guide it as it bends was tight, compounding the problem. Releasing the tight, knotty muscles did the trick. I showed her how to stretch but I explained that her extra weight was part of her problem, and now that her knee did not hurt maybe she could start walking everyday for exercise."

TMJ            
"Will, age 39, clenched and ground his teeth while sleeping and when he was tense. He suffered jaw and related headache problems. His dentist made him a customized mouthguard that helped protect his teeth, but did nothing to keep him from clenching. I told him that knots in the muscles that control jaw movement were probably to blame, and by relaxing those muscles his urge to clench would be reduced or go away completely and so would his pain problems. Sometimes postural imbalances contribute to TMJ as well. In just one visit, I was able to relax Will’s jaw muscles so his bite was normal again. After three sessions, his posture was also improved so less stress was exerted on his jaw."
